- BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS FOR SOLITAIRE

- Make a back-up copy of the program diskette, or load
- onto a fixed disk. The following files are required:
-
- 1) SOL.EXE
- 2) SOLHELP.INX
- 3) SOLHELP.DTA
-
- The SOLHELP files must be in the default PATH. I
- suggest that you use the HELP SYSTEM while you are learning.
- The intent was to have this program self-documenting, and
- this file is intended only to help you get started.

- EUsing the Help SystemF
-
- Press F1 to enter HELP. The information is presented
- "in context" but you may read the entire file.
-
- While in HELP the following keys are active:
-
- * Home takes you to the top of file (Table of Contents)
- * End takes you to the end of file
- * PgUp scrolls 1 page toward top of file
- * PgDn scrolls 1 page toward end of file
- * Esc exits the help system
- * Use the numeric keys to go directly to a desired page
-
- Several topics have multiple pages; when this is true,
- the numbers at the top of the screen show where you are in
- the topic. The numbers at the bottom of the screen show
- where you are in the help file.

- EProgram InitializationF
-
- At the DOS prompt enter the program name <SOL>.
-
- 1) When the program initializes it tests for the
- presence of a color adapter card. If found, you are
- presented with a MONITOR SELECTION MENU, press a numeric key
- corresponding to your monitor type. If there is no color
- card you are shown the Copyright notice for a couple of
- seconds and then initialization continues using the
- monochrome card.

- 2) SOL looks for the file SOLMONx.COL (x = selected
- monitor), if present, your saved colors are loaded,
- otherwise program defaults are used.

- 3) SOL looks for the options file SOLG_x.OPT, (here x
- is the game type). If found the saved options are used,
- otherwise program defaults are used.

- EMAIN MENUF

- At the Main Menu you have the following choices:
- (Choices 1, 2, and 3 are always present, choices 4 and 5
- are optional)

- 1) Press numeric 1 to play Klondike style solitaire.
-
- 2) Press numeric 2 to play Vegas style solitaire,
- cheating is disabled in this game.
-
- 3) Press numeric 3 to play Vegas style solitaire,
- cheating is allowed in this game -- but each cheat
- has a charge as follows ... each:
- Clip, Peek, Slip, or Undo costs .. $ 1.00
- Move costs ....................... $ 3.00
- Burn costs ....................... $10.00
- Judicious use of these options will allow larger
- winnings, superfluous usage is expensive.

- 4) Press numeric 4 to REVIEW and/or CHANGE OPTIONS.

- 5) Press numeric 5 to CHANGE MONITORS (requires color
- card)

- 6) Press numeric 6 to CHANGE COLORS (requires color
- card and a color monitor)

- The commands (command box) are available during play.

- NOTES:

- 1) Clears command box, requires confirmation, see
- status line at bottom of screen.

- 2) Correct from "Oops wrong key". Undo on when
- possible.

- 3) Set any playing option for current game -- from
- the game menu, you may also go to the main menu by pressing
- numeric 9, this erases the current game. The main menu is
- required for game, monitor, or color changes.

- EPLAYING SCREEN -- Play the CardsF
-
- The following notation is used to mark possible playing
- positions. A, B, C, D, E, F, and G for table play. Numeric
- 1, 2, 3, and 4 are used to play to the Aces area. Press the
- key corresponding to the "PLAY TO" position, the program will
- determine if there is a valid play and make it if possible.
-
- There are two conditions where this may not be possible ...
-
- 1) No valid play exists. In this case the invalid
- play is shown on the status line.
-
- 2) More than one valid play exists. If the DUPS option
- is set to "yes" the program asks you for "PLAY FROM"
- information. If the DUPS option is "no" the program will
- play from the right-most table position.

- EPLAYING SCREEN -- Turn the CardsF
-
- Press the spacebar to turn the cards from the deck to
- the talon. If the deck is empty the cards are restored and
- you may go through the deck again. Game 2 (Vegas) allows
- only one pass through the deck. Game 3 (Vegas with cheat)
- can reset the deck with the "Burn cheat option".

- EMINI RULESF

- The objective of SOLITAIRE is to be able to play all of
- the cards from the deck to the aces area. If you accomplish
- this you win, otherwise you lose.
-
- You begin play to the aces area with an ace. The
- sequence (within suit) is A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J,
- Q, and K.
-
- The requirements for tableau (table) play are as
- follows:
-
- 1) If there is an up card (in the position that you
- want to play to) you may only play a card of the opposite
- color and 1 lower in rank.
-
- 2) If there are no up cards, you may only play a king.
-
- If you are learning SOLITAIRE, I suggest you set option
- 5 to NEXT=YES. The program will then show ALL plays above
- the "command box". Study the layout to determine what makes
- a valid play and you will soon understand all of the rules.
